Royal Monastery of San Agustín

The Provincial Council has reconverted this building, which is currently used as the Provincial Archive and exhibition halls. It was intended to solve two urgent problems it had: saving the artistic and historical remains of the disappeared Augustinian monastery, declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1982, and solving the pressing need for space suffered, in particular, its Archive. The building stands on old rooms of the convent that were still preserved (cloister, chapter house and refectory, mainly). 💡Curiosities This monastery was a place of pilgrimage since for several centuries it housed the image of Christ of Burgos, today preserved in the Cathedral. This carving was the object of devotion of many well-known characters in the history of Spain, such as Santa Teresa de Jesús or San Ignacio de Loyola. All the kings from Isabel la Católica to Carlos II passed through its chapel. 🗺 How to get there? It is located 12 minutes walk from the Burgos Town Hall. To access by car there is a parking lot 8 minutes away located on Calle Plaza Vega. It is also located 8 minutes walk from the Burgos bus station. 📍Surrounding area In its surroundings you can also find the Convent of Santa Dorotea, the Church of San Cosme and San Damián and the Hospital de la Concepción.
